Providence (1978) 
One of DirkÁs, and Alain ResnaisÁ, finest films. DirkÁs performance shifts deftly between reality and the various nightmare versions of his character Claude Langham, conjured up by his writer-father (John Gielgud) as the latter, racked with guilt at neglecting his family, tries to mask the pain of his decaying body in a drink-fuelled, all-night stupor. Dirk waited more than a decade to work with Resnais; it was worth the wait.
