Actor, writer, artist and . . . poet. Unfortunately little evidence of Dirk’s work in this fourth category survives. Reproduced here are three poems published under his name, of which the first, ‘Man in the Bush’, appeared in The Times Literary Supplement when he was just 20. ‘Steel Cathedrals’ has been printed in at least two anthologies of war poetry. ‘At Santa Monica’ was a tribute to his agent and friend Robin Fox, who died in 1971.
